Calendar 2020: National and Regional Calendars

2020 Calendar Planning is important for every human. We always hope for bad days to pass and good days to come. Similarly, we always look to celebrate some special days. Doing so is possible only because we have a system called calendar to keep a track of time. Calendarium, a Latin word is in modern terms spelt as calendar. In India, Panchang was the system used to track not only the dates but also the position of the planets. Shubh Muhurat and impact of celestial bodies have been given adequate importance in Vedic Astrology. Every culture has a similar system or calendar. Some of which are based on the positioning of Sun in the planetary system, some on the position of Moon and some depend on the position of both Sun and Moon. These are respectively called Solar, Lunar and Lunisolar calendars.

Based on such a distinction, we have several calendar system particular to diverse cultures, as given below:

1. Indian Calendar

A national calendar which goes according to the Gregorian year and yet includes the movement of the moon to depict different festivals and holidays of the year is the Indian Calendar. This calendar is used by the government of India to declare gazetted holidays and festivals of different religions which also are public holidays.

2. Hindu Calendar

Indian Vedic system goes by lunisolar calendar system. The names of the twelve months of the year start from Chaitra (April). The days of week are also seven in this system, going by the universal norm. From Somvar (Monday) to Ravivar (Sunday), the days are arranged and tithis are given as per the movement of the Moon.

3. Jain Calendar

People of Jain community follow solar calendar having 12 months. The new year in Jain religion begins with Diwali. In 2020, this will be on November 14th, Children’s day.

4. Chinese Calendar

The culture of China, their system of prediction, cuisines, festivals etc. are unique. The calendar system they follow is divided on the basis of 12 animals. 2020 is the year of the Rat. On January 25, 2020, the year of the rat will begin.

5. Tamil Calendar

Structured as per Vedic Astrology, Tamil calendar is an age-old system using lunisolar arrangement to calculate the dates of festivals and fast. Southern-India is different from Northern-India. Instead, every corner of India is home to a different set of norms, traditions, food, costume and language. Tamil, being an old language rich in literature and customs, also continues to officially announce the important days and festivals of the year.

6. Telugu Calendar

Another sect of Southern-India, Telugu civilization has their own festivals, the way of celebrations as well as a calendar system. Masam means month and tithi represents dates. Considering the position of planets, nakshatras and stars, muhurat is calculated for all the auspicious occasions just as it is done in Hindu Panchang.

7. Islamic Calendar

Also known as the Hijri calendar, it is a calendar that depicts important days and festivals celebrated by the Muslim community. The year is of about 355 days and constitutes 12 months. The dates in this calendar change as per the visibility of the moon and not the astrologically predicted positioning for the same. In 2020, the Islamic New Year may begin either on August 19 or 20.
