September 2020 Calendar & Astrology

While the Gregorian calendar depends upon the movements of the Sun, the Hindu Panchang is a lunisolar calendar and depends on both the Sun and the Moon. Therefore, their methods of balancing the lunar and solar days also differ. Where the Gregorian calendar adds a day to the month of February every four years, the Panchang instead adds an entire month every few years, with much more complex calculations. This extra month is the Adhik Maas which will be the Ashwin month this 2020 and will be a part of the September 2020 Calendar.

The Gregorian month of September 2020 coincides with the Panchang months Bhadrapada-Ashwin. This year, September 2020 Calendar will begin with the Chaturdashi of Shukla Paksha of the Bhadrapada month. On the other hand, it will end with the Chaturdashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin (Adhik) month, rather than the Ashwin month as is the norm. The above September 2020 Calendar contains all significant holidays as per the Gregorian calendar, as well as most of the State 2020 Holidays in the month. In addition to these, though, are the feasts and festivals predicated on the Hindu Panchang that we are discussing below. These include the fasts for Anant Chaturdashi on 1 September and Purnima on 2 September. The Pradosh Vrat of Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha will also fall on 15 and 29 September, respectively. This month will also include two Ekadashi, Indira Ekadashi on 13 September and Padmini Ekadashi on 27 September. Sankashti Chaturthi is occurring on 5 September this month, and simultaneously, Masik Shivratri will fall on 15 September. On the next day, the Sun will also make its transit through Virgo, making it the day of Kanya Sankranti (link); while 17 September will be Ashwin Amavasya.

Let us now take a gander at these festivals and fasts mentioned in the September 2020 Calendar.

The schools and educational institutes do not announce a holiday on this day. However, the day is filled with celebrations and remembrance instead of studies.

Engineers’ Day

Engineers’ Day is a celebration dedicated to engineers around the country and is in remembrance of the Diwan of Mysore, one of the most prolific civil engineers of India. This commemoration is an integral part of the September 2020 Calendar and occurs on 15 September each year. Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, commonly known as Sir MV, is famous for his multiple industrial, social, and economic projects which he worked on for the development of India.

Falling each year on 27 September, World Tourism Day is celebrated around the globe to raise awareness on the importance of tourism. Daughters’ Day

India’s stand on girl children has often been under question due to certain heinous individuals. Therefore, to cherish the beautiful relationship between a parent and daughter, the fourth Sunday of September is celebrated as National Daughters Day every year. Thus, this is an important event in the September 2020 Calendar, and this year Daughters Day will fall on 27 September.

Surgical Strike Day

The date 29 September is a critical one, burned in the minds of all patriotic Indians. On this day, the famous 2016 Surgical Strike on the POK (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir) across the LOC occurred. This pre-emptive attack was on the launchpads in targeted areas close to the line of control, on the militants who ambushed the Indian Army in Uri. Ever since then, this day has been added to the September 2020 Calendar, as a significant event in the history of the Indian army.
