It is one of the ancient calendars ever found. One can say that this one is just a tributary of the Hindu Calendar of India. This holds its own importance. The Tamil Calendar 2020 has all the important occasions and events celebrated by Tamil people. It is a kind of solar calendar where the month begins as the Sun moves from one zodiac sign to other. As per the Tamil Calendar, the day begins as the sun rises. With the sunset, the day ends.

As per the traditions of Tamil People, the Tamil Year starts on 14th April of every year. Following are the weekdays and how they are known in Tamil language along with their ruling lord:

Tamil Calendar 2020 helps people to know more about Tamil Fasting days, Tamil muhurtham, pournami days and Tamil Festivals. The months of panchangam holds a great significance and the faith of Tamil people are deeply rooted in it.

Tamil Months of Tamil Panchangam 2020

  1. Chithirai: This month marks the beginning of Tamil Calendar 2020. The first date of this month is considered as the new year by Tamil People. As per English Calendar, Tamil New Year falls on the 14th of April. Public holiday is observed in the state of Tamil Nadu along with Sri Lanka. 14th May is the last date of Chithirai.

  2. Vaigasi: It is marked as the second month of the Tamil Calendar and starts on 15th May. It has 32 days. Vaigasi Visakam is the most significant day in this month. It is taken as the most favorable one for the Lord Muruga Kadavul.

  3. Aani: This is the third month and has a total of 31 days in it. It begins on 16th June and ends on 16th July. Generally, in this month, Tamil People try to avoid shifting to another house. The most famous day is Aani Uttaram for the Lord Nataraja.

  4. Adi: It begins on 17 July and ends on 17th August. It has 32 days. This fourth month of Tamil Calendar is considered to be inauspicious for marriage ceremonies. In fact, for conceiving a baby is not considered as favorable during this month. In addition, every Friday of this month, Tamil people dedicate their devotion and carry out prayers. It is the most significant month, especially for women. Every Tuesday and Fridays of Aadi month is considered to be the most auspicious days. 18th day of the month holds importance for the farmers as they prepare the paddy seedlings on this day only.

  5. Avani: The fifth month of Tamil Calendar starts from 18th August and continue till 17th September. So, it has 31 days. This month is considered to celebrate auspicious occasions. It is important with respect to rituals too. The sacred thread is changed by Brahmins in this month only. Every Sunday is dedicated to Aavani Gnayiru. This month has Vinayaka Chaturthi which is the most popular festival of Lord Ganesha. During this month, most of the marriages take place.

  6. Purattasi: In this sixth month of Tamil Calendar, Tamil people generally do not prefer meat in their meals. On every Saturday, Tamil people worship Lord Saturn. This day is also auspicious for worshipping Lord Vishnu. The month marks its starting from 18th September and ending on 17th October. For Vaishnavas, it is an important month. During this month, Navarathri, as well as Vijayadashami or Ayudha Pooja is celebrated. These festivals are celebrated to invoke Goddess Saraswathi, Lakshmi and Durga.

  1. Aippasi: The seventh month is believed to bring torrential rains in the state of Tamil Nadu. The month begins on 18th October and ends on 16th November. In this month, Annabhishekam is very popular and dedicated to Lord Shiva. Deepavali, a famous Hindu festival is celebrated in the same month only.

  2. Karthikai: This is the month in which fasting is considered to be the most important thing. It is believed that fasting in this eight month of Tamil Calendar 2020 will provide good results. It begins on 17th November and finishes on 16th December. Every Monday of Karthigai is devoted to Lord Shiva. On every Sunday, either 108 or 1008 sangu abhishekam are dedicated to the Lord Muruga and Lord Shiva.

  3. Margazhi: During this month, finding grooms for girls is considered to be auspicious. The month begins on the 17th December and ends on 14th January. Arudra Darisanam is considered to be the most auspicious day of Margazhi. Offerings are made to Lord Shiva. Mainly Thiruvaadirai Kali is offered to Lord Shiva. It is a kind of sweet, boiled pudding. Mukkodi Ekathesi is offered to Lord Vishnu. In this month, people carry out Thiruvempavai as well as Thirupaavai fast.

  4. Thai: The tenth month is important for conducting marriage ceremonies. The month marks its beginning from 15th January and finishes on 12 February. Pongal falls during this month. For Murugan devotees, Thaipusam is a special day. The Murugan devotees carry Kavadi to any one of the Aarupadai Veedu.

  5. Masi: The eleventh month is observed from 13th February till 14th March. Magam is the special day of Masi Tamil month. The most famous Shivaratri comes in this month. This festival is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

  6. Panguni: It is the last month of Tamil Calendar 2020. It has only 30 days. Panguni Uthiram is the most popular festival of this last Tamil month. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Murugan.
