The word Islam translates to “submission to the will of God”, therefore, the followers of Islam, the Muslims, live a life of submission to their God, Allah. Muslims believe that even though humans have free will, nothing can happen without the permission of Allah.

There are two major Muslim sects in Islam- Sunnis and Shiites

  • Sunnis- They comprise around 90% of the total Muslim population worldwide. They believe that the true successors of Muhammad were the first four caliphs.
  • Shiites- Shiite Muslims have a great presence in some countries including, Iran, Syria, and Iraq. They accept that the real successor to Muhammad was caliph Ali and his descendants.

There are other types of smaller Muslim dominations existing among the Sunni and Shiites groups-

  • Wahhabi- This group comes under the Sunni sect and was founded in the 18th century. It comprises members of the Tameem tribe in Saudi Arabia. The Wahhabis follow a strict interpretation of their religion that was imparted by Muhammad Bin Abd al-Wahhab.
  • Nation of Islam- This is also a Sunni sect comprising mostly African-American. It was founded in Detroit, Michigan, in the 1930s.
  • Alawite- This Shiite sect is pervasive in Syria. The followers have the same beliefs as the Shiites. However, they also observe some Zoroastrian and Christian holidays.
  • Kharijites- Because of disagreement over selecting a new leader, this sect separated itself from the Shiites. They are called Ibadis today and are known for radical fundamentalism.

Whichever the sect may be, all the Muslims around the world observe certain Islamic Holidays. Let’s check out the list of Islamic holidays in 2022.

Muslim Holidays 2022: Important Islamic Festivals 2022

Some of the major Muslim Holidays in 2022 are mentioned below in detail.

Ramadan in 2022

It is one of the most popular and prominent Islamic Holidays 2022 in India. It is observed on the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Ramadan is a holy month of fasting that includes going to the mosque, doing good deeds, and giving to charities. It is also one of the five pillars of Islam. The official commencement of Ramadan varies depending on different locations as it depends upon the glimpse of the crescent moon. The local officials determine the exact date of the commencement of Ramadan.

Ramadan is not associated with any particular season because the Muslim Calendar is a lunar calendar and is observed about 11 days earlier each year as Ramadan cycles through the Gregorian calendar.

Muslims do not eat or drink anything during the daylight hours during Ramadan. People often wake up early to eat a meal before the sun goes up. This meal is called suhur. During the day, Muslims devote their time to good deeds and spiritual activities. When the sun sets, they break their fast by having an evening meal called iftar.

Laylat Al-Qadr

It is one of the most significant nights in the Muslim Holidays 2022. This is the night that marked the revelation of the Quran by Gods to Prophet Muhammad via the angel, Gabriel. The exact date of this event is not known, but it falls during the last 10 days of Ramadan. This Muslim holiday is observed by Shiites Muslims on the 23rd night of Ramadan, and by Sunni Muslims on the 27th night of Ramadan.

It is believed by the Muslims that on the night of Laylat Al-Qadr, angels descend to earth, making it a night of peace, divine, and blessings, until dawn. It is celebrated with devotion, solemnity, and by offering prayers. Some people also spend this event in retreats in a mosque.

Eid-Al-Fitr

It is one of the most joyous celebrations in the Islamic Holidays 2022. This is the day when the month of Ramadan comes to an end and marks the end of the month of fasting. It is a feast time for Muslims across the world and people get together with their families, neighbors, and friends, and hold large dinners. People also give out food to the needy and spend their day in gratitude for the blessings they have.

Eid Al Fitr marks the accomplishment of the sacred duties by the Muslims during Ramadan, which is considered a period of devotion, prayer, and self-control. The celebrations for Eid-Al-Fitr last for around three days, a day less than the celebrations of Eid-Al-Adha. It is why this day is also given the names like “Lesser Eid” or “Smaller Eid”.

Eid-Al-Adha

Eid-Al-Adha is the largest celebration among all the Islamic Holidays 2022 and is also known as the “Feast of Sacrifice”.This festival commemorates the day when Prophet Ibrahim was ready to sacrifice his son as the Gods asked him to. On this day, Muslims across the world celebrate the beauty of sacrifice (Qurbani) by slaughtering a lamb in remembrance of the sacrifice that Ibrahim was willing to do. Sometimes, people just buy a lamb instead of actually sacrificing it. The sacrificed lamb is divided into three parts- the first one goes to the poor, the second one is for relatives, neighbors, and friends, and the last one is for the family members to eat.

Ashura

Ashura is a holy day for Muslims worldwide and is observed on the 10th day of Muharram. Muharram is the first month of the Muslim calendar. Ashura holds different significance among the Sunni and Shiites sects of Islam. For the Sunnis, this day commemorates the day when Allah helped Moses and his followers in escaping from pharaoh by parting the Red Sea. For the Shiites, Ashura is considered the day on which Al-Husayn ibn Ali and his small band of followers were killed in the battle of Karbala by Umayyad forces on October 10, 680. Shiites observe the 10th day of Muharram to commemorate his martyrdom. Some people also practice self-flagellation on this day.

Mawlid An-Nabi

This is observed as the birthday of Prophet Muhammad and is celebrated differently across different parts of the world. Mawlid An-Nabi is observed on the 12th day of the month of Rabi’ al- Awwal. It is a major Islamic Holiday in many predominantly Muslim countries. Some Muslims sing devotional songs, decorate their houses, and celebrate this day with joy, while others attend lectures in the mosque and read about the life of Prophet Muhammad. Some Muslims also believe in fasting on this day to show gratitude to God for their Prophet.

In some countries like Pakistan, the entire month of Rabi’ al-Awwal is celebrated as the birth month of the Prophet, while in other countries like Singapore, it is a one-day event that includes giving parties to poor children and orphans. One of the largest celebration sites of this event is Azhar Square in Cairo, with over two million Muslims gathering for the event.
