According to the Jaya Ekadashi legend, once, a Gandharva was singing in the gathering of Lord Indra. However, he was not able to sing properly as he was missing his better half. Due to his out of rhythm singing, Lord Indra got annoyed and cursed him saying that his beloved will change into a monster. On this, Gandharva got scared and asked the Lord for forgiveness. But Lord Indra refused his plea and asked him to leave the gathering. With a sad face, he went back to his home and was shocked to see his wife turned into a demon. Gandharva tried many ways to restore back his wife to her original form, but was unsuccessful. Time passed and one day he met Narad Rishi. He told everything to the Rishi and asked for help. On this, Narad Rishi suggested Gandharva to observe Jaya Ekadashi fast. He followed this suggestion and observed Jaya Ekadasi Vrat. As a result, his wife returned back to her normal form.
