The Ekadashi that occurs in bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu month Ashwin is called the Papankusha Ekadashi. On this day, the deity named Lord Padmanabha is worshiped, who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Legend of Papankusha Ekadashi

As per the legend of Papankusha Ekadashi, there was a cruel hunter named Krodhana. He lived on the Vindhyachal mountains. The hunter always committed sinful acts, throughout his life. He was always involved in acts like killing, violence, drinking, and theft. A day before the hunter was going to die, Yamaraj (the death god) ordered his aides to tell him about the same. After listening to his death news, the hunter became afraid. He reached the saint named Angira. He asked the saint that as he is going to die, he had a regret for all the sins and wants to get rid of their evil effects, after death.

The saint advised him to observe the Papankusha Ekadasi Vrat. Hence, Krodhana observed the fast of Papankusha Ekadasi and chanted Lord Vishnu's name all over the night. While, chanting the Mantras, the hunter fell asleep; the envoys came to take his soul to hell, but could not succeed in the same. Rather, his soul was taken to heaven as when he died he was observing the Papankusha fast.

Papankusha Ekadashi : Rituals Of The Day

The one observing the Papankusha fast should wake up early in the morning and take bath. New clothes are to be worn on this day. After this, Idol of Lord Vishnu is worshiped by using incense sticks, flowers, and fruits.

It is said that the rituals of the Papankusha Ekadashi are to be followed from Dashami (the tenth day of Hindu month). One should worship the seven cereals namely - rice, Moong (green grams), wheat, barley, gram, and Urad (black lentil). One should also avoid committing any sinful acts and should not speak lie. Also, if you are going to observe the Papankusha Ekadashi Vrat, do not eat a food containing salt and spices, on this day. Devotees chant devotional songs all over the night. The fast gets over on Dwadashi (the twelfth day of Hindu month).
