Islamic/Hijri Calendar in 2022- Significance

The Islamic calendar is shorter than the western solar calendar by 10-11 days. It is based on the lunar calendar which has 354-355 days annually. The foundation of the lunar month is the time taken by the moon to complete one orbit around the earth, which is just over 29 days. There are numerous ways in which Muslims benefit from the Islamic (lunar) calendar.

Unlike the Solar Year, many dates in the Islamic calendar are not definite and rotate every year, like that of Hajj and Ramadan. These dates are not fixed because the climate, season, and other natural factors keep on changing every month of every year. So to help people perform the act of worship in the right conditions, in different lengths of hours, the lunar calendar is used. Since the new moon marks the commencement of a new lunar month, it becomes easier for the devotees to look at the moon and know that a new month has started. Most ancient civilizations like the Jews, Greeks, Chinese, Hindus, and many more have used this system.

Islamic Calendar- Days of the Week

The days according to the 2022 Islamic calendar begin at sunset. On a Thursday evening, all the Muslims gather at Mosques for offering prayers. It is known as a “gathering day”, which according to the lunar calendar marks the start of the day. This is the reason why many Muslim nations like Saudi Arabia and Egypt observe Friday and Saturday, or Thursday and Friday as official weekends. Below is a table detailing Islamic Days in 2022:

No. Name Meaning Solar Day starting at 12:00 am
1 al-ʾAḥad the One Sunday
2 al-Ithnayn the Second Monday
3 ath-Thulāthāʾ the Third Tuesday
4 al-ʾArbiʿāʾ the Fourth Wednesday
5 al-Khamīs the Fifth Thursday
