Buddhist Calendar 2023

Buddhism is a philosophy more than a religion based on the Shramana tradition. The word ‘Shramana’ is derived from the word ‘Shram’ ('श्रम'), which means effort and hard work. It was founded by Mahatma Buddha Shakyamuni (Gautam Buddha). It is believed that according to Hindu Calendar, Gautam Buddha was born on the Purnima tithi of the month of Baisakh, and lived from 563 BCE to 483 BCE.

Buddhism was founded before Christianity and Islam. It is the third largest religion in the world after the latter two. The Buddhist holidays 2023 hold great importance among the followers of the religion. The Buddhist Calendar 2023 is mainly followed in countries like China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Laos, Myanmar, Bhutan, and India. The people of Chinese origin living in Malaysia and Singapore also follow this calendar.

The Buddhist Calendar is a solar-lunar calendar, based on the astrological scripture Surya Siddhanta, which was invented in the third century. In simpler words, it is based on the older version of the Hindu calendar which uses the planetary year. There are a total 365.25636 SI days in a planetary year.

Different Forms Of Buddhism

In the past 2500 years, Buddhism has been evolving in different cultures of Asia and recently in the last century, it has grown in the West. As Buddhism evolved in different parts of Asia, those places adopted the elements of teachings which seemed to be parallel with their local beliefs.

Hence, Buddhism grew and developed into different forms, each with a different approach and style. But one thing that was common in every approach and styles of each form was the ideals and teachings of Lord Buddha remained at the top.
