Akshya Tritiya is a Hindu and Jain annual festival. Akshay Trithiya 2015 date is 21 April. It is also celebrated as the birthday of lord Parasurama, the sixth avatar or incarnation of lord Vishnu. It was on Akshya Tritiya that Veda Vyas and lord Ganesha starting writing the Mahabharata. The meaning of Akshay is infinite and Tritiya is the third day. Akshya Trithiya falls on the third day or third Tithi of bright half of the Indian month of baisakh. Akshya Tritiya is one of the four most important days for Hindus.

In the Hindu lunar calendar, there are certain days that are absent and some come twice. But, Akshya Trithiya is one such day that is never absent from the lunar calendar. Akshaya means that never diminishes. The day is considered to be very auspicious and believed to bring good luck and success.

Legends and mythologies associated to Akshaya Tritiya

While celebrating Akshay Tritiya in 2015, it is a good idea to know the legend behind this festival. The day of Akshay Tritiya is considered to be very pious. The day is believed to be the beginning of Satyug and treta Yug. Anything initiated on Akshay Tritiya is considered to diminish till eternity.

In Hinduism, it is believed that on Akshay Trithiya lord Ganesha started writing the epic Mahabharata, as per the Veda Vyas dictation. The day of Akshya Trithiya is believed to be ruled by god Vishnu. Lord Vishnu is the preserver of the world. The day is also celebrated as the birthday of Hindu sage Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of lord Vishnu. It was on Akshay Trithiya that the holy Ganges descended to the earth from the heaven.

It is also believed that on Akshya Trithiya goddess Annapurna was also born. The lord of wealth, Kubera was made the custodian of wealth on Akshay Tritiya, along with goddess Lakshmi.

It was on Akshaya Tritiya that Sudama, the oldest and closest friend of lord Krishna, paid him a visit. He was too poor to offer anything to lord Krishna, so he took rice with him and offered to his friend. Sudama did not discuss anything about his poverty to his closest friend. As he returned home, he was amazed to see that his hut has changed into a huge and beautiful palace.

It was on Akshay Tritiya that Dushasana, brother of Duryodhana, unveiled Draupadi at the royal court. Lord Krishna protected the dignity of Draupadi by providing her the never ending veil.

Therefore, there are many reasons to celebrate the festival and worship the almighty.

The day is considered most auspicious for performing commendable tasks or punya karma. Donations, holy bathing, penance, sacrifices and reciting of mantra are considered to give fruitful results. Many people look forward to start new relationships, constructing houses, valuable purchases on this auspicious day. Buying valuable items is considered to be very lucky and it brings in good luck and prosperity. Many people buy gold jewellery and gold coins on this particular day.

Works prohibited on Akshay Tritiya

In spite of being the most auspicious day to begin any new venture, there are certain tasks that are prohibited to be done on this particular day. However, there are certain practices that are prohibited on Akshaya Trithiya. These include, ending the fast, wearing janeu and travelling. However, such activities are prohibited only in several communities.
