The tales begins like this that Lord Shiva once changed himself to an endless flame. He did this to test if Lord Brahma or Lord Vishnu is supreme, as both claimed that they were supreme. Turned to flame, Lord Shiva stood before the two Lords and asked them to find his head and feet. In order to accomplish the task, Lord Vishnu changed himself to a boar (Varaha in Hindi Varahan in Tamil) and Brahma to Swan (Hamsa in Hindi Annam in Tamil). Boar rushed toward Earth and delved deep to the core, whereas Swan flew toward the sky. Lord Vishnu couldnt find any clue and returned failed. On the other hand, Lord Brahma found a piece of Thazhambu (a flower) and got to know that it had been floating here since last 30,000 years from the head of Lord Shiva. Knowing this, he chanced upon it and claimed Lord Shiva that he has seen the top of the other. Lord Shiva realized he is lying and said that there would be no temple for Lord Brahma in this world.
