In the North India, this festival is known as Makar Sankranti. People venerate Lord Indira, prepare dishes made from the fresh harvest, decorate their houses and wear new, traditional clothes.

Thiruvalluvar Day

Thiruvalluvar Day is one of the major Tamil Nadu Holidays 2020 and falls on 16 January in the year 2020 since its a leap year, otherwise on 15th January. This day is dedicated to Thiruvalluvar, a renowned Tamil philosopher and poet and the author of Thirukkuṛaḷ, a cherished Tamil literary work comprising of couplets based on love, economical, ethical and political matters.

Puthandu or Tamil New Year

Tamil New Year is observed on 14 April annually and marks the beginning of a new year as per Tamil Calendar. On this day, people fast, visit the homes of their family members and friends, greet each other, perform puja at temples and feast on vegetarian delicacies. In the state of Madurai, Chitterai Porutkaatchi, an exhibition is held, along with Car Festival at Tiruvidaimarudur. A special dish made of jaggery, mustard, raw mango, neem and chillies called Mangai-pachadi is prepared.

Ayudha Puja

Ayudha Puja begins on the ninth day or Navami during Navratri and is known as Astra Puja in various states. On this day, instruments, weapons, machines and musical instruments are worshipped with great devotion. In Tamil Nadu. The festival of Golu is celebrated, where the idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are kept on a seven-stepped platform made of wood. On the ninth day, Saraswati Puja or Ayudha puja commences, where books, musical instruments, weapons and machines are revered.
